The Potter & Perry Fundamentals of Nursing is as the title suggests, a fundamental text for all new nurses and nursing students. It contains up to date general knowledge around the fundamental principles of nursing and how this role fits in the Australasian health system. From the preface which thanks the reader for joining the nursing profession to the last chapter you can sense the value attached to the nursing role. It is warming and inspirational, which is particularly important as this text is primarily placed to support our nursing students as they begin their studies and embark on their nursing career journeys. It is a textbook that not only provides a wealth of knowledge but also it sets out clinical reflection points and critical reasoning development, skills essential to the continuous professional development process our nurses are on during their careers. And because no discussion of nursing is complete without some wise words from our dear Florence Nightingale we can continue to embrace her words of “Let us never consider ourselves finished nurses; we must be learning all of our lives”. An inspirational quote which places this text well in laying the groundwork for building a strong and inspirational nursing workforce. Furthermore, the text shows a good reflection on how research influences the nursing practice. By placing research in the limelight with article highlights, shows the wealth of very up to date research and emphasising the need for nurses to remain aware of research findings to ensure their practice is up to date and evidence based. It also bridges the gap between theory and practice with the inclusion of clinical examples moving the student out of the world of academia and into clinical practice. The inclusion of clinical skills procedures is useful but needs to be read with caution. Readers need to be reminded that skills in the text are described in very general terms and really only serve as a general introduction to the key elements of the skill. The reader must always refer back to relevant workplace guidelines and protocols to ensure they are complying with their workplace practices and working within their scope of practice. The text comes from a standpoint of a ‘fundamentals of care’ approach rather than a more ‘anatomical systems based’ approach creating a more holistic approach to nursing assessment and treatment/management. This aligns well with the continued focus on person-centred care. In summary, this textbook has been around for at least 20years but has evolved with the times and the challenges of the nursing profession. Therefore it remains well placed as a text our nursing students and novice nurses can rely on to create a strong grounding for their nursing career.
